The Zolas have promised that they have a new album on the way, but it turns out that frontman Zachary Gray (right in the photo above) also has another LP in the works. This one is part of his solo project UnAlaska, and features production work from Edo Van Breeman of Brasstronaut/Resorts.
"Light Organ [Records] asked me if I'd be interested in producing it," Van Breeman tells Exclaim! of the UnAlaska project. "Predominantly they are his songs -- I had some ideas I contributed, but mostly I'm producing it all."
The project promises to be a major departure from the pop rock sounds we're used to hearing from Gray. "It's definitely inspired by Resorts, or Miss Kitten, or BPitch Control -- sort of minimal German type things," said the producer. "It's all electronic, and then it has some jangly Real Estate-style guitars, so it's pretty interesting. I don't really know what it is. It's pretty weird."
The album isn't yet complete and the release date is still up in the air, but it will come out through Light Organ Records, most likely next year. And even though Van Breeman is still hard at work, he has already set his sights on his next project.
"As soon as that's done, we're going to work on this Resorts full-length," he says, referring to his electronic collaboration with Brasstronaut bandmate Sam Davidson. "Meanwhile, I've been doing lots of [film] score stuff."
And, of course, Brasstronaut just released their album Mean Sun through Unfamiliar Records. See their upcoming tour schedule here.
