Yoko Ono & the Flaming Lips

"Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" (John Lennon cover)

Given the Flaming Lips' love of covering the Beatles and playing Christmas music — not to mention their frequent collaborations with Yoko Ono — this was probably inevitable: the psych rock weirdos have covered John Lennon and Ono's holiday classic "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)."

This comes from Amazon Prime's Christmas playlist All Is Bright (which also brought us a new Liz Phair song). It's fairly faithful to the original, in that in preserves the lyrics, melody and structure, although the Lips mix up the arrangement. This version is a little sparser and stranger, which psychedelic synth textures and slow, booming rhythms. There's a touch of the choral grandeur of the original — particularly when the group vocals and bells come in — but this is unmistakably the Flaming Lips.
