Following the much-deserved praise that Yautja received for their 2014 debut LP, Songs of Descent, the Nashville band return with their seven-song EP, Songs of Lament. Featuring members of Coliseum, Alraune and Nameless Cults, among others, the trio keep up the momentum of their first album here, while further honing their immensely heavy and dynamic sound. Yautja's range of influence and unique style defies genre barriers, combining ferocious death metal and visceral grind with crushing sludge and grimy crust.

"Breed Regret" starts the release off with distorted dissonance and slow, doom-filled rhythms before kicking into full-speed intensity and aggression. Ear-splitting feedback and throat-wrenching screams establish the mood for "Thankful; Appalled," commencing a minute of fast, chaotic and discordant riffs. The band transition through various time signatures seamlessly, from the explosive "Of Lament" to the droning of "Revel; Writhe," then back to the tumultuous "For Naught" and 30-second rager "Disgust; Disguise."

The nine-minute "Crumbling" finishes the EP with dark, oppressive tones and noise-ridden grooves that end in a warped fade-out. Powerful, raw and diverse, Songs of Lament cements Yautja's rapidly spreading reputation as one of the most dedicated, skilled and captivating acts out there today.
