Montreal-based "psychedelic goth shoegaze punk" outfit Yardlets have announced the follow-up to their 2012 debut LP Middle Ages. Titled Good Hangs, the new record is slated to arrive on May 12 via Hobo Slang/White Whale.
At the band's core are Sam Goldberg Jr. (Broken Social Scene, Kandle & the Crooks, Hawaii) and Jeff Edwards (Shot While Hunting) — who put together their first record after writing a song a day and recording them fast and fuss-free using cheap equipment and a laptop. They roped in Death From Above 1979's Sebastien Grainger to play drums and the rest is history.
Well, an ever-evolving history. For Good Hangs, Goldberg Jr. and Edwards teamed up with Jace Lasek of the Besnard Lakes and recorded the new material at his Breakglass Studio in Montreal. Tim Fletcher (the Stills) played bass, while David Dejas (Mystic Motorcycles) held it down on the drumkit this time around.
A press release describes the new record as "a collection of revved-up, scuzzed-out, late-night, psychedelic blasts," and you can hear the first sampling of what that sounds like on "Baby Deer." Heavy on the fuzz and feedback, light on the filler, the new single delivers distorted vocals atop whirling guitars that come across like the soundtrack to a hallucination.
