Fervent cheers and hands shaped in an array of Ws erupted from the eager crowd as Weezer emerged from billowing clouds of fog on stage and burst into the opening riff of "Tired of Sex." The song comes from 1996's Pinkerton and marked the start of a set that would see the band play that record in its entirety. Although at the time of its release Pinkerton was divisive, it's aged well and has become much loved — a sentiment made especially apparent by the fact that every member of the audience seemed to be singing along from start to finish.
Rivers Cuomo, donning his signature lightning striped guitar strap, delivered a performance ripe with the angst of his youth on songs like "No Other One" and "Across The Sea," and tearing through guitar solos alongside Brian Bell on "Getchoo." The upbeat, fast-paced "The Good Life" and crowd favourite "El Scorcho" played back-to-back were two of the set's highlights, during which the band executed the infectious chorus lines with absolute clarity and conviction. The Pinkerton set was capped with Cuomo's heartfelt solo acoustic performance of "Butterfly," but was then followed up with B-side "You Gave Your Love to Me Softly" — leaving die-hard fans in hysterics. Weezer closed with Green and Red album hits "Island In the Sun" and "Pork and Beans" which made for a fun, lighthearted conclusion to a dynamic and incredibly compelling performance.
