Ever wonder what the greats of the literary world make of the hottest rappers of the moment? We can now find out, as influential novelist Salman Rushdie has offered some commentary on a number of Drake lyrics.
In a video for the CBC, Rushdie dryly reads out a few lines from five Drake verses and then offers some thoughts on each one. When reading out the assertion from "6PM in New York" that "haters… scream out my failures and whisper my accomplishments," the novelist adds, "Yeah, I know how that feels." Who says that this 68-year-old can't relate to the kids these days?!
Beyond that, he compliments Drake's half-rhyme of "greatest" and "played" with in "Forever" and praises the rapper for quoting Marilyn Monroe on "What's My Name?" by Rihanna. When reading out a "Know Yourself" lyric about "running through the 6 with my woes," he says, "I like that one. I like that one best so far." Evidently, then, Rushdie is undeterred by Drake's ghostwriting allegations.
Rushdie mostly has very nice things to say about Drizzy, although he can only laugh when reading out "6 God" and its assertion that "you was poppin' back when Usher wore a U-chain."
