With Speedy Ortiz running late on the road, the final night of SappyFest saw some minor set time changes, including one that afforded synth-pop duo Vogue Dots the self-described "surreal opportunity" of getting the dance party started before Doldrums hit the stage.
The difference in scale between a 1 a.m. slot in a pub to 9 p.m. on the Main Stage with no other concurrent acts could have been a recipe for disaster or an amazing opportunity, depending on how the duo's nerves held up. Joined by Nathan Doucet on drums, playing some songs for the first time and urged by one boisterous fan to "Believe in yourself!," Vogue Dots overcame very brief early sound issues to deliver one uptempo dance track after another accompanied by band-controlled lighting and Babette Hayward's breathy vocals reminiscent of Braids or Purity Ring.
With a quickly rising star already, releasing two well-received EPs in 2014 and with more on the way, Vogue Dots surely would have earned a spot like this at SappyFest or any other festival in the near future, anyway, but they made it clear here that they already deserve it.
