As Winnipeg producer Venetian Snares, a.k.a. Aaron Funk, rolls out his 26th album, he looks in the rear view mirror but shows no signs of slowing down whatsoever. My Love is a Bulldozer touches on some of the orchestral themes from previous release Rossz Csillag Alatt Született. Sometimes these elements take over entirely, as on the sombre lament of "Deleted Poems." They're also used beautifully on album opener "10th Circle of Winnipeg," on which Funk employs that most baffling technique of flirting with highbrow elements while still drilling cheap dub squelches into the foundation.
It's hard to imagine anyone else pulling this off, but Funk gets away with it because no matter how grand the backdrop gets you know that you're never too far away from a blitz of two-fisted drum patterns, all of which descend on the scenery like a hail of guided shrapnel. Venetian Snares is a veritable virtuoso when it comes to drum programming, and as was to be expected, My Love is a Bulldozer is littered with downright slick percussion. "Shaky Sometimes" is as close as many will get to hearing a cyborg jazz drummer in the near future, while the fierce hammering on "Dear Poet" is one of those rare examples of something that's simultaneously elegant and aggressive.
