Vancouver's Japanese Girls Prep 'The Sharkweek EP' for Light Organ
Japanese Girls have previously played showcases for Light Organ Records, so it's not too much of a surprise to learn that the Vancouver band will be releasing their debut EP through the label. The Sharkweek EP is due out June 11.

The four-piece recorded the five-song set in various DIY spaces, including living rooms. The results reportedly expand upon the band's live sound by delving into several different styles, while the lyrics are inspired by Vancouver's rainy climate.

"It's an eclectic, energetic mix of something for everyone," frontman Charlie Kerr said in a statement. "We just recorded the songs the way they sound live and then experimented with things we couldn't do live, like having multiple guitar tracks and vocal harmonies and instruments we didn't usually play. For example, 'Friday the 13th' was created entirely in the studio using keyboards which we've never really played around with. We were all trying out different things and getting out of our punk rock, live show comfort zone."

For a taste of the band's hard-hitting, locally minded sound, stream the riff-filled "Vancouver Grizzly" below, which moves from howled verses to curiously crooned choruses. Scroll past that to watch a live rehearsal video of "Monarch Butterfly."

The tracklist is also below, while the biologically confused cover art is above.

The Sharkweek EP:
