Universal to Create Hulu-like Music Video Site

BY Shane SinnottPublished Sep 29, 2008

Universal Music has announced that it will develop an online site for music videos inspired by Hulu.com, the site setup by News Corp. and NBC that allows free, ad-supported streaming of TV shows.

Universal was no doubt inspired by the fact that music videos account for more than half of the top 20 all-time videos viewed on YouTube, and that Universal’s own YouTube channel is the most popular on the site, with over 2.6 billion views in the past year.

Presumably, like Hulu, the Universal Music site will feature higher quality videos than the standard YouTube fare, and will sell ads on all content. It’s unknown at this point weather Universal will be partnering with other labels, or featuring it’s own content exclusively. It also remains to be seen if, unlike Hulu, it will be available here in Canada.
