Twin Within Announce 'Horizontal Lines' LP for Hidden Pony

Steve McKay plays drums in rootsy Ontario ensemble Bruce Peninsula, but he's now making headway as a vocalist with his folk duo Twin Within. The band — also featuring singer Alex Samaras — are gearing up to release their debut album, which is called Horizontal Lines and will be out on July 10 through Hidden Pony.

The album was co-produced with Kirk Starkey, who provided string and wind arrangements. According to a press release, the sound is "a subtle convergence of meticulously crafted arrangements with spontaneous single takes." It was apparently an attempt to capture an "outdoor" sound, since the band first began rehearsing outdoors.

For a taste of this style, scroll past the tracklist below to hear the Simon & Garfunkel-style folk ditty "Bernie." A live version of "Tunnel to the Reservoir," filmed by Southern Souls, can also be seen below.

In a statement about "Bernie," McKay said, "We were going for a bit of a James Taylor vibe with the arrangement — it's just an acoustic guitar, tic-tac bass, piano and floor tom. We specifically recorded this with a classical music engineer, Kirk Starkey, with the hope that he might pull a little more out of the acoustic instruments and the church where we recorded. I think he did a pretty good job."

Currently, Twin Within have a couple of tour dates booked, but more are set to be announced soon.
