When Apple bought Beats, rumours indicated that Nine Inch Nails leader Trent Reznor — who was Beats Music's chief creative officer — was no longer involved in the company. That turned out to be untrue, and now Reznor has hinted that he has something big in the works for Apple.
Speaking with Billboard, he explained that his role with Apple is related to what he did at Beats. He explained, "Beats was bought by Apple, and they expressed direct interest in me designing some products with them. I can't go into details, but I feel like I'm in a unique position where I could be of benefit to them."
He added that his involvement with Apple has reduced his time for writing music, but noted that this is "very creative work" — albeit not the kind he's usually involved with.
When asked if he was working on "music delivery" methods, he responded, "It's in that world. It's exciting to me, and I think it could have a big enough impact that it's worth the effort. I'm fully in it right now, and it's challenging, and it's unfamiliar and it's kind of everything I asked for — and the bad thing is it's everything I asked for."
It seems likely that his role has something to do with streaming music. At one point in the interview, he said, "I am on the side of streaming music, and I think the right streaming service could solve everybody's problems."
At another point, he admitted, "I think that paying for music is a relic of an era gone by."
Some reports have suggested that Apple may be relaunching Beats Music next year through iTunes. As digital music sales have began to dip, Apple is reportedly looking to become competitive in the streaming music market.
