Tasseomancy

'Palm Wine Revisited' (album stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jun 2, 2015

The dynamic duo of Sari and Romy Lightman have been making music as Tasseomancy since their university days in Halifax. Now, back in their hometown of Toronto, the twin two-piece is set to unveil their sophomore full-length Palm Wine Revisited — and Exclaim! is giving you an early listen to the record in its entirety.

The Lightman sisters know their way around the Canadian indie music scene, having played as part of Austra's touring lineup, roped in Timber Timbre's Taylor Kirk and Simon Trottier to produce their debut Ulalume, and released a 7-inch single through Diamond Ring's imprint. But Palm Wine Revisited solely shines the spotlight on the Lightman ladies' creative capabilities.

It was recorded between Kensington Market, Toronto Island and the Bay of Fundy out in Nova Scotia, and features Evan Cartwright on percussion and Johnny Spence on keys. The songs were apparently inspired by This Mortal Coil's 1984 album It'll End in Tears — an influence that can be heard in Tasseomancy's embrace of the more sinister side of pop music.

Tracks like "The Grass Harp" and "Apophenia" proudly wear the pop label, but incorporate haunting vocals and eerie instrumentation to give off an ethereal, gothic vibe. Other songs like "Reality" and "What Life Must I Lead?" showcase sparse, electronic arrangements mixed with steel pan percussion that sounds vibrant and exotic, but yet unsettlingly suspenseful.

The album is a dreamy, diverse and intriguing collection of influences and experiments, and you can see the band take the new tunes to the stage in Toronto and Montreal laster this month.
