Sweet Jets

'Breath of Heat' (album stream)

BY Matthew RitchiePublished May 5, 2014

Flying south for the winter has long been a tradition for many Canadians, and Kingston, ON natives Sweet Jets are no different — at least metaphorically speaking, that is.

Rather than lament the Canadian cold, the up-and-coming garage rock trio kept warm this past winter by writing sun-soaked melodies and shredding through surf pop-inflected scorchers. The result is the band's seasonally soothing sophomore effort, Breath of Heat. Stream the album in full on Exclaim.ca ahead of its May 9 release date.

Recorded in one blistering 10-hour session by engineer/producer Matt Rogalsky (PS I Love You, the Gertrudes), Breath of Heat finds the three-piece dialling back on the sludge- and fuzz-laden sounds of last year's Square Wave, in favour of radical riffs (album opener "Of a Feather") and heartwarming harmonies ("Dream the Dots," "Ghost Feel").

Hear for yourself by listening to the album in the player below. The band are also accepting "pay-what-you-can" donations for downloads of the album over on their Bandcamp page here.

Sweet Jets are set to play a series of summer shows, which will be revealed soon. So far, you can see them at this year's Wolfe Island Music Festival.
