Canadian Celtic folk-punk mainstays Spirit of the West have announced that they will play their final live shows as a band this April in Vancouver.
Fronted by John Mann, the group will take over the Commodore Ballroom on April 15 and 16 for a two-part farewell. The band estimate that they've played the hometown venue about 50 times throughout their career, making it a fitting place to bring the band's live career to an end.
"Fans and followers of the group are probably aware of the health issues that have affected Spirit of the West, with John Mann's early onset Alzheimer's at the top of that list," reads a press release for the shows.
"These challenges have led to the decision to make this weekend of shows the last time they will appear at their beloved Commodore Ballroom, marking the end of a chapter in their long career."
Spirit of the West also announced that that there would be several shows leading up to the Vancouver dates, confirming for now that they would play Casino Regina on March 31.
Earlier this year, Mann revealed that he had been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's, but said that he would persevere as the group's frontman.
"I will continue to make music and I will continue to do shows," he said at the time of the announcement. "I need to use an iPad now to help with the lyrics and for my solo shows, either Al Rodger or Tobin Frank will accompany and support me with their diverse and abundance of talents."
