Sparks to Perform 'Ingmar Bergman' Musical, Plot Movie Adaptation With Guy Maddin

Back in 2009, legendary pop outsiders Sparks followed up their 21st studio album, Exotic Creatures of the Deep, with The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman, an album that doubled as a musical, following a fictionalized version of the filmmaker's life story. Now, the album will be expanded into a film by Canadian director Guy Maddin. First, however, it will hit the stage as a real-life musical.

As NME reports, The Seduction Of Ingmar Bergman will be performed tonight (June 15) in front of a live audience at Los Angeles' Ford Ampitheatre. The show will see Sparks play the album while Maddin reads stage directions and concert visuals are projected.

Speaking with Extra, Sparks' Russell Mael said, "We're always approaching things saying, 'well this is the first album we've ever done'… and if someone was just to be introduced to Sparks by our latest thing, we'd like it to stand on its own and be striking and relevant to right now, and we always find it a challenge to come up with something that's gonna be what maybe other bands wouldn't do or couldn't do, especially bands that have had a long career like we have."
