Kooky Canadian musician Socalled is known for his quirky ways, and fans will be pleased to learn that his latest effort includes lots more genre-crossing weirdness. Peoplewatching drops on April 28 through Dare to Care Records, and it can be streamed ahead of time on Exclaim!
The album features James Brown/Parliament-Funkadelic trombone player Fred Wesley, dancehall musician Josey Wales, jazz pianist Oliver Jones, and Quebecois artists Pierre Perpall and Yves Lambert.
The influences are diverse, although most of the album can loosely be described as hip-hop. The title track sports lush orchestrations, funky soul grooves and rapping, while "Dreaming" mixes jazz piano with DJ scratching, and "Booty Call" is an infectious dancehall foray. Elsewhere, "Hutchison St." is a stripped-down number consisting of lounge piano and piano, and danceable closer "Curried Soul" is an instrumental flute jam.
