Slum Village

The Dirty Slums

BY Gregory DrakesPublished Mar 27, 2012

Slum Village and the hip-hop Gods answer the prayers of many SV fans with the long overdue The Dirty Slums. Talk about a heavy project, The Dirty Slums features Big Sean, Phife, Rapper Big Pooh, Phonte, De La Soul and Black Milk. This Mick Boogie-hosted mixtape delivers that signature SV sound we've all grown to love ("Music," "Hunger," "Church," "Fresh"), while giving answers to many of the questions we had about the group. The legacy of Slum Village can still be heard audibly in "The Don't Know," "Da Essence" and "Reppin'," with that nostalgic drum knock. Slum give us some insight on the "evolution of Slum" with current members, as well as their relationship with Native Tongues (De La Soul, Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest), the passing of J.Dilla and Baatin, and what the future holds. As this "new Slum Village," consisting of T3, Young Rj and Illa J, may be subject to many discussions from purists still missing the original SV, there's no compromise in the sound found in The Dirty Slums. This is a definite must-listen for Slum Village fans or anyone who remembers the golden days. R.I.P. J. Dilla and Baatin, may your legacy and influence live forever.
