Following the release of last fall's "Summer Sun" single, naturally sweetened Saskatoon indie rock outfit Slow Down Molasses have solidified plans to issue that song and more on an upcoming LP. The group's Burnt Black Cars will arrive May 12 through Culvert Music.
The album will be the group's first since 2011's Walk into the Sea. Though a tracklisting has yet to arrive in full, a press release notes that the LP will indeed contain "Summer Sun" and various songs said to touch upon "societal struggle" and "normal, human moments." It was mixed by Besnard Lakes' Jace Lasek.
The album apparently was partially inspired by a series of photographs singer-guitarist Tyson McShane's father took during the 1968 Paris riots. The photographer had got a first-hand look at the unrest, having seen "artists, philosophers and students clashing with the police, cars being set on fire and tear gas flying through the air."
"The songs on Burnt Black Cars take inspiration from the events of May '68, and from my dad's stories about it," McShane said in a statement, "but they're more about the way conflict and societal struggle are an omnipresent backdrop to modern life, and about the normal, human moments that still manage to shine through."
While the album release is a couple months off, a 7-inch single featuring "Summer Sun" on the A-side and the "Winter Sun" remix from Akron/Family member Miles Cooper Seaton on the flip is out now. You can order the single here.
