This weekend, Slayer gave us a taste of their forthcoming 11th LP when they issued their "When the Stillness Comes" 7-inch as part of Record Store Day. The rest of the album will be coming our way soon, though, as the thrash icons have wrapped up recording sessions behind the set.
A press release notes that the band tracked their as-yet-untitled LP with producer Terry Date (Pantera, Soundgarden, White Zombie) in Los Angeles between last September and January. Slayer are now in the process of mixing the set, which will be the first full-length from the troupe since 2009's World Painted Blood.
Though the specifics are still being kept under wraps, there will apparently be 11 tracks on the album, counting "When the Stillness Comes." Furthermore, it's being described as "a sonic assault of brutal, ominous, lightning-fast and heavy-as-hell music," with the tunes weighing in on "the terror, the corruption and the societal turmoil that dominates our world."
The collection arrives sometime later this year via Slayer's own, currently unnamed imprint and Nuclear Blast.
In addition to featuring founders Tom Araya and Kerry King, the album reintroduces drummer Paul Bostaph, who had last recorded with the band on 2001's God Hates Us All. He rejoined the lineup in 2013 following an unamicable split with Dave Lombardo.
The album is also the first to feature guitarist Gary Holt (Exodus), who officially joined the fold following the death of founding member Jeff Hanneman.
"Tom, Paul and I put all of our ideas out on to the table, working in a more collaborative way toward the ultimate heavy outcome," King explained in a statement of making the LP. "And I've got to give big props to Gary who played lead on several of the new songs. I think he got all of his leads done in one day — he's a maniac!" Hanneman still makes an impact on the LP, though, with Araya confirming that a song written by the late six-stringer has made it onto the final tracklisting. Though the name of the number is unclear, it looks as if Hanneman played on the song before passing away in 2013 from liver failure.
"Jeff had always been writing and demoing songs, even up until shortly before he passed," the frontman said, adding of the tune in question, "Everything but the vocals had been completed, so we did the vocals and it's done. And there are a few more of Jeff's songs that we might record and release in the future."
As previously reported, Slayer will be headlining this year's Rockstar Mayhem Festival, which comes to Toronto's Molson Canadian Amphitheatre on July 15. The band have also announced a handful of solo shows around the U.S.
