While the promise of a new album from West Coast-based folk experimenters Siskiyou has been hovering since 2013, the band have now confirmed that the record will be out next year. Nervous lands via Constellation Records on January 20.
As previously reported, recording sessions took place at Vancouver's Afterlife Studio with producer/engineer Leon Taheny (Owen Pallett/Final Fantasy, Dusted, Austra), following a songwriter's residency guitarist/vocalist Colin Huebert undertook in Dawson, YK. Huebert began to battle a "serious inner ear condition" during this time, with a press release explaining this lead to the artist "grappling with severe anxiety and an unwelcome interiority, engendered by hyperacusis and a house that felt utterly haunted."
Practice sessions with the rest of Siskiyou were later performed at low volumes, which is said to have found the band "developing new sonic palettes." Described as steering Siskiyou into "chamber-pop territory," the album takes influence from PJ Harvey and Tindersticks. In addition to Huebert and bandmates Erik Arnesen, Peter Carruthers and Shaunn Watt, Nervous features guest performances from the likes of Colin Stetson, Owen Pallett, JP Carter (Fond of Tigers, Dan Mangan, Destroyer) and more.
Down below, you'll find a stream of the Nervous cut "Deserter," which features booming backups from the St. James Music Academy Senior Choir and a skronked sax solo from Stetson. Up above, you'll see illustrator Michael Drebert's inky cover art, which will be complemented by a series of 12x12 prints in the deluxe LP version of the set.
Nervous is Siskiyou's first album since 2011's Keep Away the Dead.
