Originally released in 1980, Penelope Spheeris' film The Decline of Western Civilization stands as one of the most important documentaries on hardcore punk. It was followed by two sequels — the hair metal-themed Part II and gutter punk-themed Part III. Until now, however, none of the films have received a proper home video release.
Thankfully, Shout! Factory is planning to remedy that with a proper home-release box set. Simply called The Decline of Western Civilization Collection, the release compiles all three films in a four-disc Blu-ray or DVD set.
The documentaries were restored with a new 2K scan, supervised by Spheeris herself. The set also includes commentary from Dave Grohl, deleted scenes, interviews with Spheeris, theatrical trailers and a 40-page booklet.
