When System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian announced last year's Harakiri, he revealed that he had several new albums in the works. Now he's confirmed release plans for two of those discs.
First up, the symphonic Orca will come out on June 25 via Tankian's own Serjical Strike Records. It was recorded last October in Linz, Austria, and was created with conductor Werner Steinmetz.
A press release explains, "The four acts of Orca mix influences from early 20th century composers with modern film compositional dynamics showing influences ranging from Ennio Morricone to Philip Glass. Listeners are met with a mingling of sounds and intertwining pieces that are both serene and bombastic at the same time, offering a fresh interpretation to the classical art."

A month after Orca drops, Tankian will follow it up with the jazz-leaning album Jazz-iz Christ on July 23, also through Serjical Strike. This is a collaborative affair that finds the songwriter working with various musicians, including Police drummer Stewart Copeland, pianist Tigran Hamasyan, flautist Valeri Tolstov, trumpeter Tom Duprey, and others. This album is being released under the moniker Jazz-iz Christ rather than Tankian's own name.
Only four of the 15 songs on this self-titled album feature vocals, and the results are said to mix jazz, electronic, world and rock influences. Below, stream the ultra-mellow album cut "Garuna" and the funkily experimental "Waitomo Caves."
Orca will be available to pre-order starting on May 1, while pre-orders for Jazz-iz Christ will begin on May 15. The deluxe edition of edition of Orca will include a 180-gram picture disc and a signed print of the score.
