Scott Nicks

'String of Dreams' (album stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jul 17, 2015

Halifax-based musician Scott Nicks is ready to unveil his third full-length effort String of Dreams today (July 17), and to celebrate the occasion, Exclaim! is streaming the new record in its entirety.

String of Dreams hears Nicks returning to his primary instrumental calling — the piano. And while the ivories take charge on most of the tracks, Nicks gets help from an array of musicians on percussion, bass, guitars, clarinet, flute, violin, viola, cello and vocal harmonies. He arranged all of the strings, woodwinds and piano parts himself. Jordan Murphy, Andrew Mawko, Justin McGrath, Jennah Barry, Mike O'Neill, Dave Christensen, Gina Burgess and John Spearns all get credited for playing on the album, and it was recorded at Echo Chamber with Charles Austin.

The result is a rich, orchestral collection of melodic pop songs that are thematically and lyrically "strung together" by dreams and conversations. The songs were completed back in November 2013, but as the snow began to fall, Nicks "exhaustedly" put the album into hibernation.

Now, in July 2015, he's ready for it to see the light. Listen to the sometimes poppy, sometimes experimental — but always dreamy — collection of songs in the player below.
