Rock music has lost an iconic drummer, as Scott Asheton of the Stooges has passed away. As of press time, the cause of death is unconfirmed. He was 64.
The sad news came from Stooges frontman Iggy Pop, who wrote the following message on Facebook:
My dear friend Scott Asheton passed away last night.
Scott was a great artist, I have never heard anyone play the drums with more meaning than Scott Asheton. He was like my brother. He and Ron have left a huge legacy to the world. The Asheton's have always been and continue to be a second family to me.
My thoughts are with his sister Kathy, his wife Liz and his daughter Leanna, who was the light of his life.
Iggy Pop
Asheton co-founded the Stooges in 1967. Their classic albums The Stooges (1969), Fun House (1970) and Raw Power (1973) are cited as inspirations for countless punk bands that followed. Asheton continued to play with the group when they reunited in 2003, performing on 2007's The Weirdness and 2013's Ready to Die.
The drummer was pre-deceased by his brother Ron, who was also a longtime member of the Stooges. He died of a heart attack in 2009.
Scott temporarily retired after falling ill in 2011. He is pictured above on the right.
