This spring, word emerged that Wu-Tang Clan rapper RZA would be directing a music drama starring Azealia Banks, Common and Jill Scott. Now, he's signed on for yet another film project, this one called Breakout.
Variety reports that this action-thriller will begin filming in early 2016. The script was written by Richard D'Ovidio and is about a photographer who is falsely arrested for drug trafficking in Bangladesh, and whose father hires people to break him out and find the truth.
The flick will come out through Amnesia Entertainment. Bradley Gallo and Michael Helfant of Amnesia said in a statement, "The multi-talented RZA has mastered the art of music, acting and filmmaking. We are ecstatic to have him behind the camera on our next project as he brings a fresh and innovative take to this international action thriller from Rich D'Ovidio."
Meanwhile, the music drama starring Azealia Banks was originally reported to be called It Doesn't Have to Rhyme, but it's now titled Coco. It recently wrapped filming and will be out on March 16 through Lionsgate. RZA directed the kung-fu flick The Man with the Iron Fists in 2011, making Breakout his third feature.
RZA is also the star of Mr. Right, an action-comedy film with Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick that will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 19.
