Ryan Adams

'1989' (Taylor Swift covers album stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished Sep 21, 2015

In what seems a bit like a joke seen through to completion, alt-country star Ryan Adams has covered Taylor Swift's album 1989 in full. That album is out today (September 21) via PaxAmericana/Blue Note Records, and it's available to stream in full.

While the concept screams of gimmickry, Adams actually makes 1989 entirely his own. Unlike the glossy, mainstream pop of Swift's original album, Adams turns it into a melancholic heartland rock record that sounds within his wheelhouse: "Welcome to New York," "Style" and "Wildest Dreams" are dust-caked rockers, while "Shake It Off," "Blank Space" and "How You Get the Girl" are mournful ballads. It's definitely a successful experiment.
