Russian Futurists

If the notion that a five-year sabbatical between albums results in groundbreaking pieces of work hasn't already been dispelled by bands like the Stone Roses, Elastica and the Breeders then allow Mr. Hart to demonstrate. The Weight's on the Wheels (the fourth LP, and first since 2005's Our Thickness, from Cornwall-cum-Toronto, ON multi-instrumentalist Matthew Adam Hart) isn't the masterpiece fans may have hoped for. But as the loosey goosey toy piano melody of "Hoeing Weeds Sowing Seeds" and the "Young Folks"-worthy Ruth Minnikin duet, "One Night, One Kiss," prove, The Weight's on the Wheels isn't a flop either. As long as Hart injects his pop sensible joie de vivre into songs like the hip-hop inspired "100 Shopping Days 'Til Christmas" and the honey-dripping, naive verse/chorus/chorus of "To Be Honest," the Russian Futurists are just as fine as ever. Just don't call it a comeback.
