Remember that TV show based on the life of Weezer's Rivers Cuomo? That's still going ahead, and now we've got some more details about the planned project, including who will be playing Cuomo. Deadline reports that British actor Ben Aldridge will be in the lead role of the Fox comedy pilot, which is called Detour.
American audiences may not be familiar with Aldridge, since he's mostly been in British TV and movies, including the BBC series Our Girl (2014) and the Colin Firth/Nicole Kidman film The Railway Man (2013).
To be clear, Alridge isn't supposed to be a direct representation of Cuomo. Rather, he's a fictionalized version of the rock star named Michael Sturges. It's about a musician who quits his band at the age of 30 to go back to school, which is what Cuomo did when Weezer were on hiatus in the '90s.
The pilot was written by Steve Franks (Psych, Big Daddy) and directed by Jeremy Garelick (The Wedding Ringer, The Break-Up). It will feature Joey Morgan as Walter, the main character's socially awkward college roommate. Cuomo had previously been listed as a writer, but there's no indication that he had anything to do with writing this pilot. He's an executive producer on the show, though.
Bear in mind that this is just a pilot, so it remains to be seen whether Detour will actually get picked up as a series. That being said, previous reports indicated that this would be a "put pilot," meaning that the pilot will definitely be aired regardless of the future of the series.
