PJ Harvey Shares Poetry and Photography in New Book 'The Hollow of the Hand'

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Dec 1, 2014

PJ Harvey has announced plans to release her first book. Titled The Hollow of the Hand, the collection will include works of poetry by Harvey, as well as photographs from collaborator and friend Seamus Murphy.

Compiled between 2011 and 2014, the book contains words and pictures from Harvey and Murphy's travels to Kosovo, Afghanistan and Washington, DC.

"Gathering information from secondary sources felt too far removed for what I was trying to write about. I wanted to smell the air, feel the soil and meet the people of the countries I was fascinated with," said Harvey in a press release. "Following our work on Let England Shake, my friend Seamus Murphy and I agreed to grow a project together lead by our instincts on where we should go."

The two collaborated on a series of 12 short films for Harvey's 2011 Mercury Prize-winning album Let England Shake.

"Polly is a writer who loves images and I am a photographer who loves words," said Murphy. "Our relationship began a few years ago when she asked me if I would like to take some photographs and make some films for her last album Let England Shake. I was intrigued and the adventure began, now finding another form in this book. It is our look at home and the world."

The book will hit UK shelves on October 8, 2015, with North American copies set to follow on October 20 via Bloomsbury Circus.
