UK techno frontrunner Ali Wells — aka Perc — has finally released his first solo material of 2015, and it's a politically-charged series of caustic bangers rife with deviant beats, samples of talking head sloganeering and deft punches of blown-out noise.
The title track immediately calls to mind the recent British general election, with police scanner-quality cut-ups of politicians layered over white noise, eventually dissolving into blasted beats. "Gruel" is a slightly heavier jam, with white-hot lasers and dissonant machinery sounds banging out what resembles a rhythm. There's also a completely irradiated mid-track breakdown or two that evoke the threat of nuclear holocaust as only Perc can do. The sample-filled "Change to Win" is less subtle on the political front, with lengthier bits of discourse that are somehow muddier than those from the flip side of the record.
The noises here are also more jarring; the producer is demonstrating his anger, and the result is a winning combination of form and chaos. It's amazing, and it's classic Perc.
