John Renbourn, founding guitarist for beloved British folk group Pentangle, has passed away. He was 70 years old.
As the Guardian reports, Renbourn was in the midst of a tour with vocalist Wizz Jones. They were meant to perform in Glasgow, Scotland, on Wednesday (March 25), but Renbourn didn't turn up. Police instead found Renbourn dead in his home, where they believe he suffered a heart attack.
In a statement, Renbourn's manager Dave Smith remembered his client. "He was just larger than life. Game for anything," Smith said. He went on to explain that despite Pentangle's infamy, Renbourn maintained a rigorous solo career. "It never got large because it's very specialist music, but he's had an international fan base because of his influential playing style," Smith said.
Renbourn formed Pentangle in 1967. The group's original lineup included beloved guitarist Bert Jansch, bassist Daniel Henry Edward Thompson and drummer Terry Cox.
