Pantha Du Prince Announces 'Elements of Light,' Unveils New Track

BY Alex HudsonPublished Oct 17, 2012

We already got word that German producer Pantha Du Prince (aka Hendrik Weber) was planning to return early next year with a new album for Rough Trade. Now, we've got some concrete information on that forthcoming album, in addition to a new track. The new collection, which is credited to Pantha Du Prince & the Bell Laboratory, is called Elements of Light and is due out January 15.

The album is a symphony consisting of synthesizer, percussion and a bell carillon — a three-ton instrument with 50 bronze bells. Weber first heard the bell carillon in Oslo, Norway, back in 2010, nd he recruited Norwegian composer Lars Petter Hagan to serve as his arranger and conductor on this album, while Vegar Sandholt played the actual instrument.

Additional collaborative sessions incorporated a host of other percussion instruments, resulting in a work that apparently draws on electronic and classical music, in a addition to numerous other genres. Influences are said to include John Cage, Iannis Xenakis, Steve Reich, La Monte Young and Moondog.

Elements of Light contains no traditional song breaks, although the continuous composition has been divided into five tracks (named, fittingly enough, for elements of light). Scroll to the bottom of the page to hear the chiming "Photon."

As previously reported, Pantha Du Prince is heading out on a fall North American tour this month. He will be performing older material on this trek, and Elements of Light live performances are expected to follow in late 2013. You've got to figure that performing with a three-ton network of bells is no easy feat.
