While we have mercifully seen fewer stage collapses in 2012 than we did in 2011, a recent Linkin Park show in Cape Town, South Africa, was struck with tragedy when a temporary advertising tower collapsed due to high winds.
The scaffolding had been erected by energy drink Lucozade in the parking area just outside of Green Point Stadium, where the metal stars played on Wednesday night (November 7). Shortly before the concert began, the tower fell, killing one fan and injuring 19. The woman who died reportedly passed away in the hospital following the incident.
The concert continued as planned, and the band didn't learn of the collapse until after the gig. After discovering what happened, they issued the following statement on their website:
Following our performance tonight at Cape Town Stadium, we were advised that several people were injured as a result of the collapse of an advertising tower erected by Lucozade in the parking area outside the venue.
We wish to express our deep sadness and concern for those injured and our heartfelt condolences to the family of the fan who died as a result of her injuries.
Though we have had no relationship with the sponsor or the entity responsible for erecting the structure, we take the safety of our fans very seriously and our thoughts are with all of those who were affected by this tragedy.
Linkin Park are currently touring in support of their Owen Pallett-featuring Living Things. Their schedule continues with shows in South Africa and Australia in the coming months.
