New York art rock trio Blonde Redhead are still producing new music, as evidenced by last year's Barragán, but it appears as if the audio archivists at Numero Group are planning to highlight some of the band's earliest material for an upcoming project.
Details are slim, but Numero's Instagram feed piqued fans' interest yesterday (June 14) after posting a picture of the band's Kazu Makino, Simone Pace and Amedeo Pace, along with the caption "next."
Today, the label posted a second image, which presents a handful of master tapes and audio cassettes. Among these are masters to the band's Steve Shelley-produced self-titled debut from 1994, and its 1995 follow-up La Mia Vita Violenta. The pile apparently also includes cassettes featuring unidentified live material.
Both Blonde Redhead and La Mia Vita Violenta were issued through the since shuttered Smells Like Records imprint, which had also issued the group's "Vague"/"Jet Star" and "10 Feet High"/"Valentine" 7-inches. The label previously released the two albums together on vinyl as a double-LP set.
It's as yet unclear exactly what Numero has in mind for the upcoming project, including whether it will be re-releasing individual LPs or presenting the material in a box set.
Blonde Redhead have issued nine full-lengths since the mid-'90s, with their catalogue also spread across the Touch and Go and 4AD labels. Last year's Barragán was issued through Kobalt.
Numero Group had previously done indie-minded overviews of artists including Bedhead and Codeine. The label's hefty, four-volume collection toasting Unwound concludes September 4 via Empire, which collects 1998's Challenge for a Civilized Society, 2001's swan song Leaves Turn Inside You, and a number of rarities.
