Sad news has befallen Nick Cave's family — his 15-year-old son has died after falling from a cliff.

Arthur Cave was taken to hospital on Tuesday night (July 14) after he was found on a path 60 feet below a cliff at the Ovingdean Gap.

As The Guardian reports, bystanders attempted to administer first aid before he was airlifted to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"A 15-year-old boy who was found with life-threatening injuries on the underpass of Ovingdean Gap, having fallen from the cliff above, has sadly died in hospital on Tuesday," said a Sussex police spokeswoman. "Members of the public carried out first aid on the boy before he was taken to the Royal Sussex county hospital, Brighton, just after 6 p.m. He later died there of his injuries. The death is being dealt with by the coroner's officer."

Cave's family — including his wife Susie and Arthur's twin brother Earl — issued a statement confirming the death. It reads:

Our son Arthur died on Tuesday evening. He was our beautiful, happy, loving boy. We ask that we be given the privacy our family needs to grieve at this difficult time.
