When New Order broke up back in 2007, the split quickly turned ugly, as bassist Peter Hook opened up about the strained inter-band relationships and even threatened to sue singer-guitarist Bernard Sumner and drummer Stephen Morris if they carried on the group without him. Now, four years later, New Order are getting ready to reunite without their bass player.
This reunited version of the group will feature Sumner and Morris, as well as guitarist Phil Cunningham, bassist Tom Chapman and keyboardist-guitarist Gillian Gilbert. The five-piece will play at Ancienne Belgique in Brussels on October 17, and La Bataclan in Paris the next day. This gigs will aim to raise money for Michael Shamberg, the ailing film producer behind Pulp Fiction, Garden State and Erin Brockovich (plus several New Order videos).
Speaking with BBC 6 Music, Gillian Gilbert said this of the reunion: "It's been a long ten years since I took a break from the band, so I I'm really happy to be back, and this is a great place to start. Michael is a very good friend, and I want to help him, so it's perfect timing for me to come back now."
Since she's calling this a "place to start," we're guessing that there will be more reunion gigs in the future.
Meanwhile, Peter Hook tweeted sarcastically, "It's a shame that, I thought Bad Lieutenant weren't bad!"
Hook is getting ready to tour behind the classic Joy Division albums Closer and Unknown Pleasures with his band the Light.
