Nate Mendel of Foo Fighters, Sunny Day Real Estate Announces Solo Album

BY Alex HudsonPublished Jan 20, 2015

Nate Mendel is the longtime bassist of Foo Fighters and a co-founder of Sunny Day Real Estate, but now he's fronting a project of his own. It's called Lieutenant, and the debut album If I Kill This Thing We're All Going to Eat for a Week will be out on March 10 through Dine Alone Records.

The album was produced by Toshi Kasai (who has worked on several recent releases with the Melvins), with sessions taking place between Foo Fighters dates at the band's own Studio 606. Mendel handled frontman and songwriting duties himself.

Although Lieutenant is billed as a solo project, the album features a generous heaping of guests. This includes a couple of Mendel's longtime bandmates: Foos guitarist Chris Shiflett and Sunny Day Real Estate frontman Jeremy Enigk. Other guests include drummer Joe Plummer (formerly of Modest Mouse, currently of the Shins), Page Hamilton (of Helmet) and Josiah Johnson (of the Head and the Heart)

The nine-song tracklist is below. Scroll past that to hear the mid-tempo rock ballad "Believe the Squalor" [via Stereogum], the dynamically atmospheric "Rattles" and the breezily low-key "Belle Epoque."

The album can be pre-ordered in a few formats from Dine Alone's online store. This includes orange and white vinyl colour variants.

Look for Lieutenant to tour this spring.
