The production provides a haunting backdrop for the easy listening, communicable, melodic, country-esque pop of My Morning Jacket. They are firmly planted with the same contemporary sensibilities as artists like Palace or the Bingo Trappers. As with those musicians though, there is an expropriation of familiar old euphony. With MMJ, it's like that lo-fi Shrimper sound reaching back to the palatable AM radio friendly sounds of the early ‘70s or late ‘60s, such as Glen Campbell. The arrangements are minimal in presentation, yet very intricate. The eerie vocals front a lamenting hollow acoustic music that only heightens the awareness of the strong songwriting.
