Mount Eerie Announces 'Sauna' LP

BY Josiah HughesPublished Aug 26, 2014

It's been two years since Mount Eerie (a.k.a. Phil Elverum) released the impressive companion albums Clear Moon and Ocean Roar, though he's hardly been idle, instead offering up supplemental releases and last year's heavily AutoTuned Pre-Human Ideas collection. After releasing the DUST photo book earlier this year, Elverum has finally announced the next proper Mount Eerie record.

According to a press release, the new double album is called Sauna. It was recorded over the course of 15 months in the artist's own studio, the Unknown, which is located in a reclaimed church in Anacortes, Washington.

The LP is said to include 12 songs, "some very short, some very long." Other than that, the press release says the theme of the album is "vikings and zen and real life."

Speaking with Exclaim! earlier this year, Elverum teased the new release. He said he had been "very slowly, starting very abstract and weird and kind of wrestling these things into song form." He also called the songs "heavy" and "pretty long and complicated."

That's about all we know about Sauna for now, but the album is expected to arrive in early 2015 via the artist's own P.W. Elverum and Sun imprint.

Those who live in the United States can catch Mount Eerie on tour this fall, where songs from Sauna will be previewed in "extremely stripped-down versions."
