Midnight/Shitfucker

Untitled Split

The split album is a delicate balance — it can work really well, to the point where the songs start to only sound good in context with one another, like a regular album, or they can be awkward, highlighting the disparities or differences between artists, and not quite living up to the hype of two well-known artists collaborating. The Midnight/Shitfucker split is not exactly cohesive, but it's fun as hell to listen to.

Side A, Shitfucker's "Sadistic Sodomystic Seducer," is a little more straightforwardly punk than is usually to my metal ears' liking, but it's a good song. Their guitar work is melodic and innovative, and they do a good job of keeping the song interesting throughout. Side B, Midnight's "Nightmare Part II," is my favourite part of this split by far. If GISM and Motörhead had a bastard child who listened to black metal, they would write this song. It's catchy, technically on-point and fun.

These two songs don't really sound alike or different enough to form an interesting dichotomy, but nonetheless, this is a solid release, and certainly worth a spin or two if you are into thrash-y, blackened punk'n'roll.
