Michael Rault

"Hiding from a Heartbreak" on Exclaim! TV

BY Lisa VanderwykPublished Jul 15, 2015

Toronto's Michael Rault is a singer, multi-instrumentalist and clever craftsman; he assembles glamour, psych, groove and blues influences to create pop nuggets such as those that comprise his newest LP, Living Daylight, which has been compared to offerings from well-loved artists like Tame Impala, Mac Demarco, Sean Nicholas Savage and even Marc Bolan. Rault will be travelling across America with his grab bag of sounds for the rest of the summer, but Exclaim! TV captured a short performance in Toronto earlier this year, before he hit the road.

Rault performed a rendition of "Hiding from a Heartbreak" aboard a boat on Lake Ontario as part of NXNE's M for Montreal Bruise Cruise. Surrounded by clear skies and calm water, the setting was ideal for Rault's easy rocking.

In the clip below, Rault performs his languid rock'n'roll number with the support of a full band. It begins with ambivalent guitar and laid-back drumming, but Rault soon breaks in with his bluesy crooning. Although he sings about experiencing yet another heartbreak, he never loses his calm composure.
