Cruise ship supergroup Metal Allegiance are heading from the high seas into your hi-fi, as it were, via the release of their self-titled debut album. Featuring musicianship from members of Megadeth and Testament, and vocal assists from Phil Anselmo, Lamb of God's Randy Blythe and more, Metal Allegiance docks September 18 through Nuclear Blast.
The project was put together by Mark Menghi, who initially gathered a number of metal vets to perform classic covers on genre-themed cruises. Now, he's put together an LP of original tunes with Testament guitarist Alex Skolnick, Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson and the Winery Dogs Mike Portnoy. The standard edition of the album features nine new songs, with a deluxe digipak release featuring a bonus cover of Dio's "We Rock" and a DVD featuring a 45-minute behind-the-scenes documentary. A double-LP set will contain all 10 tracks.
In addition to the core music makers, a series of high-profile vocalists were drafted into the recording sessions. This includes Phil Anselmo, Lamb of God's Randy Blythe, Hatebreed's Jamey Jasta, Mastodon's Troy Sanders, Lacuna Coil's Cristina Scabbia, Arch Enemy's Alissa White-Gluz, Testament's Chuck Billy, Death Angel's Mark Osegueda, Trivium's Matthew K. Heafy and more. Many of the singers had jammed on cruise ships as part of Metal Allegiance.
"It's always my pleasure to jam with such esteemed musicians and brothers, and my contribution to this project is further proof of that fact," Anselmo said in a statement, adding, "Hail to all heavy metallers the world over!"
Additional musicians that show up on Metal Allegiance include former Down and Pantera bassist Rex Brown, current Slayer six-stringer Gary Holt, Anthrax's Charlie Benate, Sepultura's Andreas Kisser and Dillinger Escape Plan's Ben Weinman.
"I could not be any more excited or proud of the Metal Allegiance album," Portnoy noted. "It's everything I've always dreamed of and hoped for and a hundred times more!"
