London's Max Cooper, better known for his EPs and remixes, drops his debut LP Human on UK label Fields, though the release seems to have produced a brilliant first single, "Adrift," that the rest of the album struggles to catch up to. "Adrift" is a beautiful track with runs of scant piano and frenetic percussion, but it's all held together by the tender musings of Kathrin deBoer, her sultry vocals an ethereal warmth that seeps into every crevice of the song.
It's a huge sound that the rest of Human aspires to reach but never quite makes it to — tracks like "Supine" and "Automaton" revel in thick layering and brilliant synths that swell and recede but ultimately lose themselves in cyclical repetition. That being said, the album still encompasses a depth and organic feel that carries from track to track, even if it doesn't quite hit its mark.
