Matthew E. White

"Rock 'n' Roll Is Cold" (lyric video)

Rock'n'roll has often been described as "cool," but rarely has it been described as "cold." Leave it to Matthew E. White to go against the grain, as the songwriter (of bands like the Great White Jenkins and Fight the Big Bull) has released a lyric video for his new single "Rock 'n' Roll Is Cold."

The song has a steady acoustic groove and honky tonk piano that fall somewhere between country soul and vintage rock'n'roll. White's vocal delivery is feather-light as he informs us that rock'n'roll is cold, R&B doesn't have a key, and there's no trick to gospel. These claims are supported by what appear to be animated paper cutouts. It was animated by Travis Robertson.

White said in a statement that the song "is about how we continue to take the most vibrant, soulful, deep music and make it a caricature of itself. We look into it, force it to turn in on itself, force it to turn back on itself, and we lose the source, we lose the mystery, the magic, and we seem to be unaware that any of that is even happening."

His album Fresh Blood will be out on March 10 on Domino.
