Before he was a drummer and guitarist for Magik Markers, Pete Nolan explored the outer realms of "ghost folk" with his Spectre Folk project, a group he still revisits. This spring, Spectre Folk will release their first twelve-inch as a quartet, as Nolan has been joined by Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, the Grey Lady's Peter Meehan on guitar and Tall Firs bassist Aaron Mullan.
The quartet initially teamed up to record a seven-inch for their new version of the old Spectre Folk song "The Blackest Medicine." Instead, they ended up with what a press release describes as "a four-song studio collage monster that won't fit in your locker and smells like smoked banana peels and undies blowing down an alleyway. A vibraphone, piano, and a plate reverb unit the size of a Brooklyn apartment were all employed by the Spectre like Uri Gellar used spoons -- inappropriately, desperate and bent."
Woodsist will release Blackest Medicine Vol. 2 as a limited twelve-inch on March 29. Frustratingly brief clips from the album can be streamed here, while older Spectre Folk material can be heard on the group's MySpace page.
