Lonnie in the Garden

'Black' (album stream)

London, ON outfit Lonnie in the Garden will be releasing their new album Black next week, but Exclaim! is giving you a chance to give it an early listen.

The project started in 2010 with Lynne Craven, whose songwriting forms the foundations of the group's music. She was later joined by Natasha Roberts, while the band's current incarnation features members of fellow Londoners Wild Domestic and Guelph-based sludge-folk unit WHOOP-Szo.

Their sounds come together on Black — the first of a two-part album, to be followed by Blue later this year. The new record floats between psychedelic rock and experimental pop, anchored by Craven's raspy, bluesy, gospel-esque vocals.

From the instrumental "Intro," the album moves into the groove-centric, twangy titular track "Black & Blue," before delving into dreamier territory on "Song 3." "Dog Hunter" gets louder and grungier, while "Natasha" runs the gamut from sweet, gentle folk croons to explosive, sludgy guitar riffs. It's capped off by "Outro," which provides a psychedelic bookend on the six-song collection.

Black arrives on April 28 through Out of Sound Records, but you can give it a spin in the player below, right now.
