Liz Phair still hasn't followed up her best-forgotten 2010 effort Funstyle, but she's ushering in the holiday season with the festive tune "Ho Ho Ho."
The song is a rather gloomy take on traditional Christmas tropes. It features sleigh bells, a refrain of "ho ho ho," and references to stockings, Santa and a burning yule log. Phair's lyrics take a decidedly pessimistic view of a disappointing holiday.
She told Stereogum, "I've always wanted to write a dystopian Christmas song. Holidays are a time of emotional turbulence, of unpredictable highs and lows. The retail and advertising sectors bill it as the greatest time of the year, but some seasons you are saddled with a real clunker! I find that both touching and funny. I tried to contrast chirpy, cheery elements with a depressing story line, a là David Sedaris's 'SantaLand Diaries,' the Waitresses' 'Christmas Wrapping,' and that timeless classic, 'Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.'"
