So far in 2011, Living with Lions' music has been overshadowed by the massive controversy generated by the allegedly blasphemous artwork of their new album Holy Shit. The packaging, which features lyrics laid out as the "Poo Testament" and depicts Jesus as a turd, drew the wrath of Canadian Heritage Minister James Moore and Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings (FACTOR), and eventually led to the band returning their entire government loan. Now, Living with Lions have launched a Kickstarter campaign to help get them out of their financial hole.
Through the fundraising website, the band are attempting to raise $7,400, which they say will be used in a "fight to save their album against the forces of the Canadian government."
Living with Lions are committed to keeping the album available with its original artwork in tact and intend on "showing the Canadian government that freedom of speech and freedom of expression are core, fundamental values that they are willing to defend."
If this Kickstarter campaign is successful, it will hopefully "show the Canadian government that there are enough people in the world willing to spend their money on the arts."
This is a cause close to Living with Lions' hearts, since FACTOR's funding of Holy Shit meant that the non-profit had to backpedal and justify giving money to an supposedly offensive piece of art.
Pledges begin at $3 and larger donations can earn some pretty cool thank-you prizes. Most notably, if you donate more than $1,000, bassist Bill Crook will get your name tattooed on his body. If you remember, this isn't the first time Living with Lions have used body ink for band-related purposes (see the video below).
