Last year, jazz pianist Joe Albany was remembered with the biopic Low Down. Now, that flick has spawned a soundtrack album, which will come out on August 7 through Light in the Attic's imprint Cinewax.
Naturally, the album includes lots of material from Albany — seven of the 15 tracks are credited or co-credited to him. There are also four appearances from Ohad Talmor (who served as Low Down's composer), plus jazz heroes like Thelonious Monk, Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Jack Teagarden and Max Roach.
According to a press release, "This is a compilation that both jazz lovers and jazz neophytes will dig the most." The recordings have been remastered for this album.
Low Down (Original Soundtrack) features liner notes from Talmor, Albany's daughter Amy-Jo, and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Flea served as a co-star and executive producer on the film, and he said in a statement, "This is the sound that gives me the energy to go out into the world and try to shine a light. As a child, this is the music I listened to that blew my mind; it let me know that all things were possible. If human beings were capable of doing this, then anything could happen."

The New Jersey-born Albany was known for his avant-garde, modern bebop jazz. He battled drug addiction and ultimately died of respiratory failure and cardiac arrest in 1988 at the age of 63. Low Down tells the story of his success and struggles, and stars John Hawkes, Elle Fanning, Glenn Close, Peter Dinklage and more.
